<p>Unit bias and the denomination effect are close cousins in crypto. A token priced at $0.0001 feels easy to accumulate (like coins). Bitcoin at $60,000 feels like a large bill you are reluctant to break. Neither price signal tells you anything about expected return.</p>

<p>In crypto, unit bias shows up as a preference for lower-priced tokens. An investor looks at a coin priced at $0.004 and another priced at $43,000 and instinctively feels the cheaper one has more room to grow. That feeling is unit bias. It has nothing to do with fundamentals.</p>



<p>The bias runs in two directions. First, a low per-unit price signals that you can own a lot of whole units, which feels psychologically satisfying. Second, a high per-unit price like Bitcoin&#x27;s creates friction. Paying $43,000 for a single coin feels wrong, even though you can buy $50 worth of BTC just as easily.</p>



<p>Crypto prices span an enormous range. A token priced at $0.000001 and one priced at $3,000 can have identical market capitalizations if the supply differs by the right factor. Price per unit tells you almost nothing about value. Market cap, liquidity, and on-chain activity are the metrics that matter.</p>



<p>One way to view unit bias in crypto is that investors would prefer to own a whole token over fractional ownership. Therefore they only consider the prices of digital assets that they afford to buy in whole units. </p>

<p>Take Bitcoin. Each bitcoin comprises 100 million units, or sats. The sats are named after Bitcoin founder Satoshi Nakamoto. Sats are akin to pennies in some ways. But the key difference is that while a penny equals 0.01 USD, a sat has much more zeros involved —  0.00000001 BTC. </p>

<p>But the relevant question is not how many units you own. It is what those units represent. If Token A has a circulating supply of 100 trillion tokens and a market cap of $500 million, a 10x gain requires the market cap to reach $5 billion. If Bitcoin&#x27;s market cap is $1.2 trillion, a 10x gain requires it to reach $12 trillion, which is a different kind of bet.</p>



<p>Neither is automatically better. The point is that the number of units you hold does not determine your upside. Market cap and supply do.</p>



<p>One practical rule: before buying any token because the price looks cheap, divide the market cap by the fully diluted supply. That is the number that matters, not the price per unit.</p>
